NRSC 4020 – Entomology – Insect Collection

This assignment taught me how to properly identify insects to the Family level. The ability to identify insects can be used in many contexts, knowing what insects are in the area can help determine what management would be best for an area. This applies to agriculture (crop pests), forestry (tree pests), and recognizing invasive species such as the European fire ant or the Japanese beetle in urban or rural environments. Although we are often concerned with pests, it is also important to be able to recognize beneficial insects in the environment such as our variety of natural pollinators.
